Maintaining friendships can be both rewarding and challenging. When friends encounter life's transitions—like moving for a job, starting a family, or pursuing higher education—distance can emerge. In the novel, 'Mixed', Farrah and Corrina were somewhat different in terms of what they wanted from a life experience. Corrina was very marriage and family oriented. Farrah was more career oriented and never wanted to have children of her own. But even through all of the changes, their friendship grew stronger over time. They showed us that, with a bit of effort, it's entire possible to keep changing relationships alive and thriving.

Recognize the Different Phases

Friendships evolve as individuals take on new roles and responsibilities. Understanding that a friend may be dealing with significant life changes while you are in a different stage is key to fostering empathy. For example, new parents often have limited free time due to their child's needs. Recognizing this lets you adjust your expectations and support your friend more effectively.

Communicate Openly

Open communication is the foundation of any strong friendship. Share your thoughts and feelings about how much the relationship means to you, especially during transitions. Setting up regular check-ins—like a 15-minute call every week—can help bridge the gap created by life’s demands. Even sending a simple text can show you care and keep the connection alive.

Find Common Ground

Despite differing lifestyles, there are often shared interests that can strengthen your bond. Think about activities you both enjoy, such as an old TV series you watched together, a book club where you can discuss your latest reads, or even childhood memories that bring a smile. Engaging in these shared activities, even virtually, can help maintain that essential sense of camaraderie.

Embrace New Traditions

Adapting your friendship to fit new circumstances can be very beneficial. Establishing new traditions can help you stay connected. This could be something as simple as a monthly coffee catch-up at a local café or a themed movie night over video call. These small rituals, even if just once a month, help strengthen your bond no matter where life takes you.

Be Understanding and Flexible

Life is unpredictable, and flexibility is essential in maintaining friendships through various phases. If your friend can’t join a scheduled call due to unexpected issues, remain supportive. Friendships thrive on understanding; being forgiving during busy times fosters a positive relationship dynamic. A flexible attitude makes it easier for both of you to reconnect when the time is right.

Leverage Technology

In today’s digital age, staying connected has become significantly easier thanks to various technologies. Utilize messaging apps, social media, or online games to keep in touch. For example, sending a short video message or sharing a humorous meme related to an inside joke helps maintain your connection. Research shows that friends who use technology to communicate regularly feel more bonded.

Schedule Face-to-Face Time When Possible

If distance permits, make an effort to plan regular visits. Face-to-face interactions, even if they happen just a few times a year, carry more weight than virtual chats. Try to make these moments special—taking a weekend away together, trying a new a new restaurant or revisiting a favorite spot from your past can deepen your connection and reinforce your bond.

Nurturing Lifelong Friendships

Navigating friendships through different life phases can be a challenge, yet it is also an opportunity for growth. With understanding, open communication, and a willingness to adjust, friendships can not only withstand the test of time but flourish. Invest in your connections and cherish the relationships that enrich your life, no matter where you are on your journey.
